Our mission is to improve quality of life for women by helping them get life-saving breast and cervical screenings.
History
LBCHP is funded through the CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP), which was founded after Congress passed the Breast and Cervical Cancer Mortality Prevention Act of 1990. Designed to provide low-income, uninsured, and underserved women access to timely breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services, the NBCCEDP currently funds all 50 states, the District of Columbia, 6 U.S. territories, and 13 American Indian/Alaska Native tribes or tribal organizations.
In October 2002 – as part of the NBCCEDP – LBCHP was established at the Louisiana State University Health New Orleans’ School of Public Health. Today, LBCHP is the largest program within Louisiana Cancer Prevention & Control Programs (LCP). It is the only NBCCEDP program housed at an academic institution, and is considered one of the most effective and efficient programs of its kind. LBCHP has helped lower Louisiana’s breast cancer death rate from the highest in the United States, as well as raised the state’s screening rate to the national average.
